Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI)
The Strategies of Behavioral Intervention Team (SOBI) is a multi-disciplinary team of appointed St. Philip’s staff and faculty who are responsible for identifying, assessing, and responding to concerns and/or disruptive behaviors exhibited by students and visitors who may present a risk of harm to themselves, members of the community, or the institution.
Our Mission
To promote student, faculty, and staff success and campus safety by identifying individuals who demonstrate behaviors that may be early warning signs of possible disruptive or violent behavior and intervene at the earliest possible point.
There may be times when concerns about behavior arise. Examples of such concerns include but are not limited to:
- Written material containing alarming wording or out of context wording
- Statements that indicate the threat of harm to self or others
- Disregard for personal boundaries
- A significant change in behavior
All St. Philip’s College employees are mandated to report incidents. If you are concerned about someone’s health and safety, please submit a SOBI report by following the steps below.
-
- Complete the Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI) Incident Reporting Form.
- Submit any supporting documentation, if appropriate.
- If you’d like assistance completing the form, please contact a SOBI Co-Chair for assistance; Alexandra Rodriguez, arodriguezfiguer@fenxiong.net or Alexandra “Sasha” Wilhelm, awilhelm3@fenxiong.net
-
- When do I file a SOBI incident report?
- Anytime you are worried about the behavior or wellbeing of a student and believe they may need additional resources.
- What should I do after I submit a SOBI report?
- As a courtesy, notify your immediate supervisor of the incident and follow your department protocols.
- Can I follow up on a SOBI report that was submitted?
- A SOBI team member will confirm receipt of your initial report. A reporter may follow up but based on the nature of the report and student confidentiality, disclosure of information will be limited.
- What if I don’t know a lot of the information needed on the SOBI incident form?
- Complete the form to the best of your ability. A SOBI team member will edit the form and make any necessary corrections. What is important is that you file a report.

Distracted and disruptive behavior in the classroom should be addressed if it is safe to do so. Several intervention strategies exist to address distracted and disruptive behavior. The following are some examples:
- Faculty may ask a student to refrain from specific behaviors in the classroom.
- Faculty may ask a student to meet outside of class to discuss specific behaviors
- Faculty may ask a student to meet prior to returning to class.
- Faculty may ask a student to leave the classroom.
- Faculty may dismiss class if the disruption is significant enough that continuing to teach is not feasible.
If a student is asked to leave class and/or dismissing class is necessary, the incident should be reported to the SOBI Team, immediate supervisor, and the Chair of the Department.
